『英語で楽しむ赤毛のアン』（松本侑子／対訳・解説、the japan times出版）をガイド役に、以下の原文を読みました。（３章）
What’s your name?”
The child hesitated for a moment.
“Will you please call me Cordelia?” she said eagerly.
“Call you Cordelia? Is that your name?”
“No-o-o, it’s not exactly my name, but I would love to be called Cordelia. It’s such a perfectly elegant name.”
“I don’t know what on earth you mean. If Cordelia isn’t your name, what is?”
“Anne Shirley,” reluctantly faltered forth the owner of that name, “but, oh, please do call me Cordelia. It can’t matter much to you what you call me if I’m only going to be here a little while, can it? And Anne is such an unromantic name.”
マリラが名前をたずね、アンが「ロマンチックな名前」を答えるくだりには、以前、伏線がありました。前章のドライブで、アンが小道や池に「私ならこんな名前を付ける」と話していたこと、ダイアナという名前で盛り上がったことが、それです。
そして、もっと大きな伏線は、マシューが駅でアンの名前を尋ねなかったことです。
それは、アンがマリラの前で名乗るために、作者がそうしたというわけです。
